AEPA Music Exam

Passing the AEPA Music Exam shows your competence to teach music in the Arizona public schools. You must answer questions in five areas based on Arizona Academic Standards.

  1. Music Theory, 17% of the test: Understand characteristics of musical notation, elements of melody, harmony, and choral structure; know techniques for arranging or composing music.
  2. Music Performance, 27%: Know methods of sound production; principles of singing and playing instruments; techniques for band, orchestra, choral performance, and conducting.
  3. Listening Skills, 21%: Identify all the components in a musical recording, such as melody, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, harmony, vocal and instrumental parts.
  4. Music History and Culture, 21%: Demonstrate knowledge of the development of Western music from the Middle Ages to the present time, as well as the development of music from around the world.
  5. Music and Other Disciplines, 14%: Know theories of music education and interrelationships between music and other art forms and disciplines, including technology, history, and culture.
